Zum Beginn des Buches werden zwei Kinder, die bekannte Eltern haben, aus einer Privatschule entführt. Die für den Secret Service arbeitende und für die Sicherheit in der Schule zuständige Jezzie Flanagan und der Polizeipsychologe Alex Cross, versuchen den Fall aufzuklären. Es stellt sich schnell heraus, daß der Lehrer Gary Soneji ein Doppelleben führt. Auf der einen Seite ist er der nette Familienvater auf der anderen Seite ein kaltblütiger und sardistischer Mörder, der das Verbrechen des Jahrhunderts begehen will und dessen großes Vorbild, der Entführer des Lindbergh Kindes ist. Bei den Ermittlungen stoßen Alex Cross und Jezzie Flanagan auf immer neue Fragen. Leidet Gary Soneji an einer gespaltenen Perönlichkeit oder ist er nur ein Schauspieler? Hat er die Kinder wirklich entführt? War er es, der Lösegeld verlangt hat? Wer sind seine Komplizen?

Wer den Film zu dem Buch kennt sollte auf einige Überraschungen gefaßt sein. Die Personen aus dem Film sind zwar die gleichen wie im Buch, aber die Geschichte weicht erheblich vom Film ab. Also ist auch für Überraschungen gesorgt.

First and foremost, let me quote reviewer "dan x": ..."I did a little research and found that this book is the first in a series for fictional detective Alex Cross. (I hate to read a series out of order, even if the stories are independent and don't continue from book to book.)" I also did some research and came up with the same results as he did, and I too, hate reading books out of sequence. It is indeed, a very fast and engrossing read that has pretty much of everything in it. I will doubtlessly look forward to reading future Alex Cross novels, there's no doubt about that. If they are anywhere near as good as "Along Came a Spider" was, then they're excellent.

I really enjoyed this book which was the first book by James Patterson that featured Alex Cross. Although not as fun to read (in my opinion) as "Kiss The Girls", I still found this book very hard to put down. There were numerous enjoyable plot twists and, for a lot of the book, I was guessing what was really going on. Also, the ending was very exciting and I did not see it coming at all. Fans of the suspense/thriller books and fans of James Patterson should not be disappointed with the book!

This was the first book I encountered from Patterson and I still think it's his best. Very good, short chapters so you can pick up quickly after a break.

Thrilling to the last page.

That's the second book I read by James Patterson and I gotta tell you I really start to like this author.

I like how he creates his characters. The main character Alec Cross seems to be a really nice, cool person and you like him from the first page on. Of course there is a little lovestory tied in but you would never guess how it ends. Like I said, that's the second book it read by this author and it's the second one that has a kinda sad, weird ending. That's the only reason why I only gave it three stars. You really have to read this book it's a good story and you get caught by it!
