Beschreibung von buecher.de

This book provides a very readable and up-to-date description of language variation in American English, covering regional, ethnic, and gender-based differences. The authors include situations ranging from historically isolated, rural dialects to developing, urban ethnic varieties as they consider the descriptive, theoretical, and applied ramifications of dialects in American society. The second edition of American English includes new chapters on social and ethnic dialects, including more comprehensive discussions of Latino, Native American, Cajun English, and other varieties, samples from a wider array of US regions, and a separate chapter on African American English. Updated chapters and exercises as well as features such as a phonetic symbols key, and a section on the notion of speech community, combine to make the new edition a valuable resource for students and specialists alike.

5 von 5 Sternen Readable and Thorough - the Perfect Textbook

Walt Wolfram writes from 30 years of experience in sociolinguistic study, and both he and Natalie Schilling-Estes are gifted writers. If you do not understand Labov's own writings, you will find his studies translated for students in this book in a way that will make you understand both their reasoning and their significance in sociolinguistic study and beyond. This is a textbook for students in that it assumes no more than an introduction to linguistics as prerequisite. It is just that level that it builds well on. The theory of sociolinguistics is made accessible and the reader emerges with a profound knowledge of language in the United States.
