This 1997 Newbery Medalist tells the story of Woodrow Prater, who goes to Virginia to live with his grandparents in Coal Station, Virginia, when his mother, Belle, disappears.
There's a mystery at the heart of this lyrical novel for young adults: what really happened to Belle Prater, the aunt of 12-year-old Gypsy Arbutus Leemaster? When Gypsy's cousin, Belle's son Woodrow, comes to live in tiny Coal Station, Virginia, he sets off a chain of events that precipitates a solution to this enigma, as well as the mystery of Gypsy's own father's death seven years earlier. Ruth White's characters, particularly the cross-eyed, brilliant Woodrow, are sharply drawn, and the small-town life of rural Virginia is wonderfully described.
Sometimes the truth isn't as hard to find as to believe. . .Gypsy's cousin Woodrow has just moved next door to live with her grandparents. Everyone else in town has been guessing what happened to her Aunt Belle, but maybe she can find out the truth from Woodrow. But in needling out the truth about her aunt's disappearance, she must recognize the truth of her father's death as well
Woodrow and Gypsy will make you fall in love with them!!!This wonderful story begins with the disappearance of Woodrow's mother and how he comes to live with his Grandparents. Woodrow is one real smart cookie. He within a short time wins the acceptance of the other kids with his pranks and high jinx. Not to mention his uncanny ability to spot a chigger nest a mile away. Woodrow helps Gypsy come to terms with her father's suicide which she witnessed and had blocked out. These two kids will capture your hearts and make you want to hold them forever
Extraordinary, interesting - couldn't put down! This book is about a boy named Woodrow whose mom disappears and his dad sends him to live with the boy's grandparents who live in a small town below the mountains where he used to live. Gypsy (his cousin) is telling the story in her point of view. They become friends and have many "adventures" together. In my opinion it does teach some things. In one point of the story, Gypsy is getting kind of mad at Woodrow because he gets away with more than she does. I think that teaches you that you have to be understanding, because Woodrow just lost his mom without even knowing what happened. I recommend this book for teenagers especially, but also adults should read it.
Moving story of friendship and mystery!Belle Prater's Boy is the story of Gypsy Leemaster and Woodrow Prater. When Belle Prater disappears, Woodrow, who is cross-eyed and wears hand-me downs, is pestered with questions such as, "Do you know where your mama is" or "How'd she leave, Woodrow?". When he comes to live with Gypsy and her family, Gypsy and Woodrow become friends. Even though Gypsy is the town beauty, she has many regrets and secrets. I really enjoyed this book because you really want to find out what Wodrow tells Gypsy at the end. This is a great book and will be enjoyed by many.
