Poe Starter KitAny young student of Poe might do well to own this book. Granted, bigger volumes can be found, but this brings to print some of his major works. Start with this one, then buy "Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe..." and learn something about the person he was. Read about first as a poet and author here, avoiding all the fluff about horror in his life. "The Raven" is a love story, not a scary poem. The poet is lamenting a love lost to death, not creating a creepy tale about a talking bird. "The Tell-Tale Heart" is about the foolishness of crime and criminals, not a murder mystery. Read the best of Poe, and then buy a full set of his poems, stories, letters and criticisms. Fascinating stuff.
The perfect introduction to an American masterThis writing opens the door to another land. Poe's imagination, creativity, and insight flow through these pages in a way rarely achieved by any other author. It is unfortunate that so many associate Poe only with horror and tortured genius. His works should be savored individually; while at the same time estimated as a whole. With that view in mind I recommend this book wholeheartedly and declare its author one of the greatest of all time.
It's Poe. You'd better dig that. When it comes to classic, ancient literature, few beat Poe, the man credited with creating science fiction (though his was more of a speculative fiction) and the modern detective story (with Murders in the Rue Morgue). Two creations to be proud of. And while authors like Hemmingway and Fitzgerald are often called dated, in a hundred years Poe will still be Poe. They're still effective as anything written today. Although they might not horrify the modern horror readers. Not that Poe was all about horrifying you anyways. I think people get the wrong idea of Poe. Thinking his writings to be all gory and morbid. Reading his work (especially his poems)he seems to be filled with more sadness than madness. And sometimes hope shines through his hoplessness. He's actually a pretty diverse artist of words. There are various collections of Poe, and this one is good as any (and as a plus, it has a jazzy cover). There are various stories and poems that are alone worth the price.
Every tale Poe has ever written is magnificant! This book is a must for any die hard Edgar Allan Poe fan. It has all his poems and stories in it. It was hard to put down the book in the middle of a story it was that good! I loved this book!
