Beschreibung von buecher.de

This work offers a critique of traditional religion scholarship, focusing serially on multiple interrelated targets. Most prominent among these are history of religions as a discipline; Mircea Eliade, the founder of the discipline; contemporary textbooks on world religions; and the oft-repeated bromide that religion is a 'sui generis' phenomenon. He analyzes the ideological basis for and service of the 'sui generis' argument, demonstrating that it has been used to constitute the field's object of study in a form that is ahistoric, apolitical, fetishized, and sacrosanct.

Rezensionen von Amazon.de-Kunden
5 von 5 Sternen Well worth the money...

A rigorous, compelling anlaysis of the intellectually atrophied state of contemporary religious studies. That the views it propounds are considered controversial at all -- and the fact that it has been so hotly attacked in academic reviews by the ultra-orthodox Christian scholarly community -- indicate that Russell has touched a nerve that needed to be tweaked. The book tackles its subject directly, with minimal pretensions, but with theoretical sophistication. Not to be missed by anyone concerned with the current state of scholarship in religious studies and in cultural studies generally.
