Live Aid

Live Aid ist der Name eines Benefizkonzerts, das am 13. Juli 1985 zu Gunsten Afrikas stattfand. Es wurde maßgeblich von dem Musiker Bob Geldof aus Anlass der damals akuten Hungersnot in Äthiopien organisiert. Es war die Fortführung des Band-Aid-Projekts und der Konzerte für Bangladesch, die Geldof früher organisiert hatte. Darauf folgten noch Band-Aid-II (1989) und Band Aid 20 (2004).

Live Aid war das bis dahin größte Rockkonzert der Geschichte. Es fand parallel im Londoner Wembley-Stadion und im John-F.-Kennedy-Stadion in Philadelphia statt. Auf diesen zwei Bühnen traten abwechselnd für mehr als 16 Stunden die Topstars der damaligen Musikszene auf.

Dazu gehörten u. a. Queen, David Bowie, Elton John, Dire Straits, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Santana, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Status Quo, The Who, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins (welcher sowohl in London, als auch in Philadelphia aufrat - nach seinem Auftritt in London flog er mit der Concorde nach New York), U2, Simple Minds, Duran Duran, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath und viele mehr. Das Konzert wurde weltweit im Fernsehen übertragen.

Der Erlös der weltweiten Spendenaufrufe kam hungernden Menschen in Afrika zugute. Am 9. November 2004 wurde ein DVD-Set von diesem Konzert mit etwa 10 Stunden Spieldauer veröffentlicht. Die Erlöse daraus sollen ebenfalls in die Hunger-Hilfe für Afrika fließen.

Am 2. Juli 2005 veranstaltete Geldof anlässlich der Konferenz der G8 in Edinburgh eine Fortsetzung der Live Aid-Konzerte unter dem neuen Namen Live 8. Diesmal wurden keine Spenden gesammelt, sondern Unterschriften, die die Entscheidungsträger der G8-Staaten zur Erhöhung der Entwicklungshilfe und einem Schuldenerlass für Afrika veranlassen sollten.
