Die Geschwister Amrei und Dami, Kinder eines armen Holzfällers, wachsen nach dem Tode der Eltern in getrennten Häusern eines Schwarzwalddorfes auf. Amrei wächst zu einem lebensfrohen und tüchtigen Mädchen heran, während Dami in Selbstmitleid vergeht und schließlich nach Amerika auswandert.
