Beschreibung von buecher.de

At first glance, Richard Armstrong and Keith Townsend seemed to have little in common. One was the son of an illiterate peasant, who emerged from the most backward corner of a Europe ravaged by a bitter war. The other was raised in an mansion on the far side of the world while the war was just another piece of news. One was a hustler, a thief, ready to change his story, even his identity, if it would gain him a momentary advantage. The other was the scion of a well-known family, groomed for a public role from his earliest years, a rebel who didn't care if anyone approved of what he got up to. But they did have one thing in common. Both of them were gamblers. Both were prepared to risk everything in their battle to control the biggest newspaper empire in the world.###

Utilizing his extensive theatrical experience, Martin Jarvis handles the difficult task of narrating Jeffrey Archer's bestseller, The Fourth Estate, quite admirably. As in his extremely popular novel, Kane & Abel, Archer has once again created dual protagonists--in this case, chronicling the parallel lives of two rival media tycoons, each bent on global domination of the newspaper industry. Because of this doubly complex plot device, the narrator must possess a very flexible voice to differentiate not only the two lead characters, but each of their large supporting casts as well. Jarvis tackles the challenge quite capably. Although the work is billed as fiction, the personalities and events bear a striking resemblance to actual stories seen in headlines. So recognizable, in fact, that lawsuits were filed in an effort to halt publication of Archer's book altogether. Perhaps that can explain his relatively safe, methodical effort here. As usual, he has devised an absorbing and intricate plot, but the story follows the action forward so closely that there is little time allowed for insight into the character's motivations or for philosophical narrative. Still, Archer's considerable talent as a storyteller and the noteworthy performance by the very talented Jarvis make The Fourth Estate a compelling look at the cause and effect of ruthless corporate behavior and provides an intriguing peek behind closed boardroom doors. 4 von 5 Sternen MY VIEW OF "THE FOURTH ESTATE"

If you have been through a Jeffrey Archer novel before, you could call this novel "classic Jeffrey Archer". This is a story of a conflict, in the sense, of the two main characters of the story. The emphasis of the narration is on their life and their "love" for success. The author maintains the pace of the story in a clever way. The reader is never allowed to form an opinion about any one of the characters until it is fairly clear whom the author sides with. The characters are sometimes unrealistic and farfetched and you rarely do identify with majority of their feelings, but having said that, this isn't an "intellectual" story about which you ponder after reading it. It is good to read with some coffee on a dull rainy Sunday.About the story. Keith Townsend is born into a well to do family in Australia, while Lubji Hoch is born into a poor Jewish family. Even as children, both know what they want from life eventually, and train themselves in their own but different worlds to realize their ends. At some point in the story they are pitted against each other. From here on they try to outdo each other and in doing so cross every possible limit and boundary. In the gripping climax both are on the verge of bankruptcy, who will hold his nerve, who is the better of the two...

3 von 5 Sternen Finished it, but so what?

I keep expecting Archer's latest books to measure up to the earlier ones, but was disappointed again. Even though the chapters alternate so that one media mogul has every other chapter, I had to keep checking back to remember who was who. I didn't get to like--or hate--either one because I had a hard time really understanding them. The other characters were basically non-existent. I kept reading because the paperback was easy to carry and I knew from the beginning that only one would "triumph" in the end. Oh well, it was better than another Archer that I had to put down after a couple of chapters

5 von 5 Sternen Best book I have ever read.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. the character are well defined and very interesting. A real page turner.

2 von 5 Sternen Nothing new and captivating

It takes some efforts to finish the book. At first I thought it is "Kane and Abel" with a different cover but after reading the Fourth Estate, I found it is nowhere near "Kane and Abel". Disappointing

3 von 5 Sternen GOOD, SOMEWHAT PREDICTABLE, BUT NOT HIS BEST

I LOVE THE WAY ARCHER WRITES, BUT THIS WAS CERTAINLY NOT KANE & ABLE OR AS THE CROW FLIES. THE STORY BUILDS AND BUILDS AND THEN FALLS A LITTLE FLAT. YOU KNEW THE OUTCOME AND REALLY WANTED SOMETHING MORE DRAMATIC. AS AN ARCHER FAN, I READ ALL OF HIS BOOKS, AND THIS ONE IS WORTH READING, HOWEVER, NOT HIS BEST.
