Just when it seems that there cannot possibly be another twist to the Harry Potter tale, Stephen Fry dons his haughtiest and naughtiest tones to bring Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to vibrant life on audio. Harry Potter has spent the first 10 years of his life at the mercy of the dreadful Dursleys--the aunt, uncle and fat, spoilt brat of a cousin who reluctantly gave him a home after the death of his mother and father. But on his 11th birthday Harry discovers that he is no ordinary boy, and despite the best efforts of his hideous relatives he escapes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his new life as a trainee wizard. And the rest, as they say, is history... As Harry battles against the evils thrown in his path, Stephen Fry injects the proceedings with a wry, dry and extremely contagious humour that perfectly suits the tale, wringing out the best in Harry and his cohorts as they get to grips with their new lives at the sharp end of Hogwarts. Fry's innate upper-class drone is perfectly suited to the telling of this most magical tale, cracking into the high-pitched squawking of Hermione the swat, or the gentle tones of the firm but fair Dumbledore, or the evil sniping of slimey Snape at precisely the right moments. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a fine story and much has been written about its success but until you have heard Fry's cracking reading of this most magical of stories then you simply haven't lived. As with any audio book, this one is perfect for car journeys and an ideal way of introducing reluctant readers to the magic that is Harry Potter. (Ages 9 and over) --Susan Harrison

5 von 5 Sternen Best Reader

There are some people out there, like my one friend, who don't care for that "gay british accent". I, however, quiet like it. I've listened to Potter-Books read by Jim Dale as well as by Rufus Beck, and eventhough I was quiet taken by both their performances, I like Fry's best. I do especially give him credit for being the only reader who doesn't give McGonogall and Hermione a hysteric touch and for leaving Dumbledore energetic, when both, Dale and Beck, make him sound like a wheezy old man. His Hagrid sounds almost exactly like Robbie Coltrane, who does a wonderful job in the movies.

Needless to say that the novel itself is one of the best I've read in the past years, as is the whole series. So if you like Audiobooks, this is one I can recommend.

5 von 5 Sternen Fry is the best

This review is dedicated to all books of HP I`ve listened to so far. For this I need one sentence: FRY IS THE BEST MAN FOR THIS JOB!!!! I do not say I do not lilke Rufus Beck, the German reader. But Stephen Fry, though known as a comedian actor, does his job more seriously in a way. While I was always able to laugh at Rufus Beck`s funny interpretation of voices and characters, Fry can make me believe his kind of interpretatoin MUCH more intensive. Every single character finds a home in his voice without being teezed, you can say. Rufus Beck`s interpretation sometimes seems a bit odd and stupid while Fry`s one NEVER!!!! My wish and suggestion for the future: Fry should NEVER stop reading HP - books!!!!!!!!

5 von 5 Sternen A FEAST FOR YOUR EARS (English and German)

Like the books, the audioCDs are a great entertainment.

Whether the story is heard in English (Stephen Fry) or in German (Rufus Beck), it is always a real treat. Both of them produced masterpieces, in their own styles.

No version is read monotonous, but both readers are really filling the story with life. You hardly notice the passing of time while you listen.

I can only say: Stephen Fry and Rufus Beck can give each other a run for their money that others may have difficulties to match.a) German:

Rufus Beck is demonstrating how one can do magic with his voice.

Though at the passages of speech the accentuation isn't always ideal, but sometimes a bit inappropriate and "unnatural", the enormous variety of voices Rufus Beck produces is an incomparable experience.

The different characters can be distinguished and recognized at their voices and accents so clearly as if you have a radio play with as many individual performers. It's impressing too to sometimes hear more than one voice at a time (Weasley twins, school song, &tc.). And there always still seems to be supply for new characters.

Beck succeeded outstandingly in finding appropriate melodies for the Sorting Hat's songs &tc. (though he perhaps shouldn't have accompanied it by guitar in the 4th volume).

The division into CD chapters of 5-7 min. enables you to easily continue hearing the story after you might have had to stop during a CD.

(Of course you have the translation inaccuracies and mistakes you unfortunately find in the German books. And Beck skips a sentence now and then.)b) English:

Stephen Fry succeeds greatly in putting his audience under a spell.

Though sometimes a bit exaggerated (but not to mind) at the passages of tale, the accentuation at the passages of speech partly is met better than in the German version.

But the variety of voices is not as large as Beck's, and it's sometimes harder to recognize individual characters by their voices. Nevertheless, Fry gives each person his or her individual, appropriate character.

The Sorting Hat's songs &tc. are just recited as poems by Fry.

The division into CD chapters of about 1 min. is perfect to enable you to continue hearing the story after you might have had to stop during a CD. But the breaks between the book chapters are a bit long, always interrupting the flow of the read story; and you sometimes don't know whether it's the end of a CD or only of a chapter.Whichever version you may choose: you surely won't regret the purchase of the CDs.
