Learn sure-fire tactics and combinations from one of the world's top chess players Attack? Defend? Swap pieces? Tactics are the watchdogs of strategy that take advantage of short-term opportunities to trap or ambush your opponent and quite possibly change the course of a game in a single move. Why play in a fog, only hoping that your opponent will blunder when International Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan can show you how to put the tactics of the world's chess legends to work for you. Choose from the double attack, the pin, the skewer, deflection, the decor, x-rays, windmills and many more time-tested tactics. Using classic board situations arranged in chapters by tactical themes, Seirawan teaches you how to: plan your entire game from the very first move; think ahead, step-by-step, anticipating every obstacle your opponent can throw your way; and position yourself for the smashing combination and endgame you've always dreamed of. Board positions from actual games played by history's great chess tacticians are provided throughout. Review tests for each topic let you track your improvement. In no time you'll be playing better, with more confidence than you ever thought possible.

This is the second in Seirawan's four volumes, taking the reader from the very basics of chess through appreciation of advanced play. He does a remarkable job of discussing tactics that usually appear only in books for advanced players and communicating them to anyone with a grasp of playing fundamentals. The first part of the book deals with basic tactics and how they can be used individually and in combination. In the second part, Seirawan introduces some of the great chess tacticians and their games, further illustrating tactics as they work out in real-life play.

5 von 5 Sternen "I couldn't put the book down"

I couldn't put the book down! I can't say that about any other chess book I have read. Tactics are fun! You can't just have one chess book and expect to learn everything you need too, however you definitely need this one in your collection. After I read this book my game has improved. I recommend re-taking the tests at the end over and over again at least 3 times with some time in-between. That way the tactics will really sink in. The best thing about this book you can understand the concepts without having a chessboard in front of you to work them out. They also use real games of masters, that way you can load them from Chessmaster 6000 database (a computer chess program) and just advance one move at a time while reading the book. Although some moves in a few games didn't match up exactly with chessmaster 6000 the final outcome of the games did end up the same. I don't know if chessmaster 6000 was wrong or Yasser/Silman. The only bad thing I can say is, I wish they would have marked the files and ranks and their diagrams, it would have made it a little easier. I found myself constantly counting and saying the alphabet. I talked with Yasser (on chess.net, he frequents there a lot, and the cool thing is, if you challenge him he will accept, even if your just a beginner chess player!) about this book and he said "out of all his books with Jeremy Silman, he (Yasser) did the least work on this one." So I guess my congratulations goes to Silman for an outstanding job.

5 von 5 Sternen Great First Book on Tactics

If you have never read any book on Tactics before, you should read this one. This book will surely help you improve if your USCF rating is below 1400.Read this complete book and you will see the change in your game.It doesn't take more than a week to read it.At the end it has some real good tests to see your level of tactical ability.Another book I seriously reccomend is Winning Chess Strategies.Read both the books to become a strong and complete amateur player.

4 von 5 Sternen Pretty good

This book was well thought out and well written, but I think that 'Chess Tactics For The Tournament Player' by Alburt is better. The latter has an entire chapter devoted to actually calculating variations, something that Seirawan ignores. The chapter includes all the psychological things that can go wrong when calculating. Also there is more emphasis on destruction, destructive combinations and other things not covered in Seirawans book. All in all Seirawan did an excellent job with this book, but adding some text on actually calclating combos would help.

5 von 5 Sternen Improve your chess game here!

If you want to improve, read this 4 book series! Each book takes a fresh approach so you won't get bored with the syle. And most importantly, it WILL increase your rating!!!! Thxz Yaz, these were (and are) needed...

5 von 5 Sternen Chess tactics can be hard to learn but Yasser made it simple

This book is so great. Yasser can make something as difficult as chess tactics as simple as checkers.
