Everyone knows a bird dog leads with its nose. Everyone but J.C. After all, what's a pup supposed to think when he's welcomed to his new home by a cat who thwacks him on the nose with his claws, a dog who bites him on the nose and a mad mamma bird who attacks the sorest part of his body with her beak. J.C. can't help thinking there must be a better way.
A great Book!I don't know how somebody would not give this book 5 stars.I read this book for the first time when I was in 2nd grade. I'm now in seventh and still read it once a year.
the Backward Bird Dog is a funny book with a good story. The Backward Bird Dog is about a Quail hunting puppy who is taken away from his canine family to a new home. On his first day at his new home, JC, as they call him gets bitten on the nose by Chomps another dog, scratched on the nose by Gray the cat, stung on the nose by a bee and pecked on the nose by a bird. He is afraid that he will lose his nose and won't beable to smell or catch Quail. So from then on he protects it the best he can. As he gets older he learns new things such as when to play with Chomps and when not to bother Chomps. Also not to bother Gray Cat when he is mouse hunting. Later he gets to a camp where he learns to be a better bird dog and he wants to make his owner, Carol proud. The first day he is scared and feels abandoned by his owners. Until he meets Big Mike an older dog who tells him that his owners will come back for him , and that he should work hard to be a good Bird Dog so his owners will be proud. JC points quail and fetches and follows scents like a very good quail dog. When his owners come to get him the camp master, Mr. Tommy, says he is a bad pointer. Or is he?
Warm, funny, and a wonderful read for kids. This adorable book made us laugh from begining to end. You will follow J.C. from puppyhood to adulthood and all his antics in between. It also provides the chance to imagine what a dog thinks about us, and life. This is a must read for anyone!
Funny, entertaining and warm!Anyone who loves animals and has had special pets will truly enjoy this book. We could easily relate to all the quirky personalities of the family pets and JC's hysterical experiences as he tried to adjust into it. I checked the book out of our local library but realized I needed one of my own to read to my grandchildren.
