[27] Allen, Harrison A., zu Philadelphia, daselbst 17. April 1841 geb. und bis zur 1861 erfolgten Promotion med. ausgebildet, war als Resid. Phys. am Pennsylv. Hosp. thätig, bis er 1862, beim Ausbruch des Bürgerkrieges, in die Armee der Konföderierten eintrat, bei der er bis 1865 diente. Hierauf erhielt er den Lehrstuhl der vergl. Anat. und med. Zoologie am Med. Dep. der Pennsylv. Univers., wurde[27] 1867 Prof. der Anat. und Chir. am Philad. Dental Coll. und 1870 Surg. am Philad. Hosp., sowie Schriftführer des Med. Board. 1875–85 war er Prof. d. Physiologie an der Pennsylv. Univers., 1894 wurde er erster Direktor des neugegründeten Wistar-Instituts für Anatomie. A., der im November 1897 starb, war als vergl. Anatom, wie als Kehlkopf- und Nasenarzt sehr berühmt. Seine Publikationen sind anat. und path.-anat. Inhalts, darunter: »Outlines of comparative anat. and med. zoology« (1869) – »Postmortem examinations in army hospitals in Washington« (Ib.) – »Localization of diseased action in the osseous system« (Ib. 1870) – »On the mechanism of fracture of the skull« (Ib. 1874) – »Conformation of the bones of the orbit« (Ib. 1870) – »On fractures of the lower jaw treated by the interdental splint« (Philad.
