April 1839, studierte in Edinburg, Berlin, Wien und Paris, wurde 1863 Dr. med. in Edinburg, 1865 Assistant-Prof. des Instituts of Med. in Edinburg bei Hughes Bennet, 1869 Prof. der Physiol. am King's Coll. und der Roy. Instit. zu London, 1871 Fullerian Prof. d. Physiol. an der Roy. Instit. of Lond. und seit 1874 wieder Prof. der med. Institutionen in Edinburg, 1876 Fellow der Roy. Soc. in London. Er war ein tüchtiger Naturforscher, besonders auf dem Gebiete der Biologie und schrieb: »Morbid appearences met with in the brains of 30 insane persons« (zusammen mit J. Batty Tuke, Edinb. Med.[1452] Journ. 1869) – »Influence of the vagus upon the vascu ar System« (Transact. of the Roy. Soc. of Edinb., 1870) – »On the physiol. action of drugs on the secretion of bile« (Ib. 1879) – »Lectures on experimental physiol« (Lancet 1871 bis 72) – »Outlines of practical histology« (1877) – »A text book of physiology« (1880). R. starb 21. Febr. 1899.
