[172] Bigelow, Henry Jacob, als Sohn des tüchtigen Botanikers und Arztes Jacob B. (1787 bis 1879) in Boston geb., ist als Chirurg daselbst 30. Oktober 1890 gestorben. Er verfasste u.a. folgende Schriften: »Manual of orthopedic surgery« (Boston 1845), hatte 1844 den Boylston-Preis erhalten – »Ether and chloroform: a compendium of their history and discovery« (Ib. 1848) – »Ununited fracture successfully treated with remarks on the operation« (Ib. 1867) – »The mechanism of dislocation and fracture of the hip, with the reduction of the dislocations by the flexion method« (Philadelphia 1869; deutsche Übersetzung von Eug. Pochhammer, Berlin 1873) – »A Century of American medicine, 1776–1876« (Philadelphia 1876). Sehr verbreitet ist die von seiner neuesten Erfindung Kenntnis gebende Schrift: »Litholapaxy or rapid lithotrity with evacuation« (Boston 1878). Ausserdem eine Anzahl von Aufsätzen, namentlich im Boston Med. and Surg. Journ. und verschiedene Addresses etc.
