[333] Cobbold, Thomas Spencer, bekannter Helminthologe, geb. 1828 zu Ipswich, wurde 1844 ein Schüler von Crosse im Norfolk and Norwich Hosp., studierte dann in Edinburg besonders unter Leitung von John Goodsir und Edward Forbes, erhielt 1851, in seinem Promotionsjahre, die goldene Medaille, wurde Kurator des anat. Museums der Universität und 1851 bis 52 Senior Präsident der Royal Med. Soc., widmete sich eine Reihe von Jahren vergleich.-anat. und zoolog. Studien, unter Leitung von John Goodsir, liess sich 1857 in London nieder, wurde Dozent der Botanik am St. Mary's Hosp., sowie 1861 der Zool. und vergl. Anat. an der Middlesex Hosp. School und 1873 Lehrer der Botanik am Veterinary Coll., das für ihn eine Professur für Helminthologie errichtete. C., der 20. März 1886 zu London starb, war unbedingt eine der ersten Autoritäten auf dem Gebiete der Helminthologie. Die Titel einiger seiner wichtigeren Schriften sind: »Entozoa; an introduction to the study of helminthology, with reference more particularly to the internal parasites of man« (London 1864) – »On the present state of our knowledge respecting entozoa which are either known or are presumed to be introduced into the human body by the consumption of animal food« (Ib. 1865) – »Worms, a series of lectures on practical helminthology at the Med. Coll. of the Middlesex Hosp. with cases[333] illustrating the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of internal parasitic diseases« (Ib. 1872) – »The internal parasites of our domesticated animals; a manual of the entozoa of the ox, sheep, dog, horse, pig and cat« (Ib. 1873).
