Febr. 1905 in Providence, studierte drei Jahre unter Agassiz in Cambridge, wurde 1864 Bibliothekar und Kustos der Society of natural history in Boston, 1871 Staatsentomolog von Massachusetts, 1877 Mitglied der Entomologischen Kommission der Vereinigten Staaten, 1878 Professor der Zoologie und Geologie in Providence. Er schrieb: »Guide to study of insects« (Salem 1869); »Zoology« (New York 1883); »Life histories of animals, outlines of comparative embryology« (das. 1876); »Half hours with insects« (Boston 1877); »Our common insects« (das. 1876); »A naturalist on the Labrador coast« (1888); »Observations on the glacial phenomena of Labrador and Maine« (1891); »Textbook of entomology« (New York 1898) und eine Reihe andrer Unterrichtsbücher; »Lamarck, the founder of evolution« (das. 1901). Auch gab er 20 Jahre (bis 1886) den »American Naturalist« heraus.
