Okt. 1832 in Camberwell, wurde 1871 Fellow der Royal Society, 1883 Direktor des Universitätsmuseums in Oxford und 1896 Professor daselbst. Auch ist er Präsident der Englischen Anthropologischen Gesellschaft. Er schrieb: »Anahuac, or Mexico and the Mexicans« (Lond. 1861); »Early history of mankind and of civilisation« (1865, 3. Aufl. 1878; deutsch, Leipz. 1866); »Primitive culture: researches into the development of mythology, philosophy, religion, art and custom« (1871, 4.
