Febr. 1825, gest. 1889, studierte seit 1844 am Harvard Coll. und promovierte daselbst 1847, war 1851 bis 54 Prof. der Physiol. der Med. School zu Buffalo, 1854 bis 57 am Coll. von Vermont, 1859 bis 61 am Long Island Coll. Hosp. und seit 1855 Prof. der Physiol. am New-York Coll. of Phys. and Surg. Sein Hauptwerk ist, neben vielen kleineren Einzelaufsätzen, der »Treatise on human physiology« (New-York 1859; 4. ed. 1867). Weitere Publikationen D.'s sind: »A treatise on physiology and hygiene for schools, families and colleges« (New-York 1868; auch ins Französ. übers.) – »Anatomy of the placenta« – »Physiology of the cerebellum« – »Intestinal digestion«, sowie die Artikel: »Embryology« in Johnson's »New Universal Cyclopedia«. Während des Krieges diente er lange Zeit als Militärarzt.
