Juni 1828, ward 1771 Geistlicher, bereiste 1775–94 Europa und ward 1804 Archidiakonus in Wiltshire. Er schrieb: »Travels in Switzerland« (Lond. 1789, 3 Bde.; 4. Aufl. 1801); »Travels in Poland, Russia, Sweden and Denmark« (1784–90, 5 Bde.; 6. Aufl., das. 1803, 3 Bde.; deutsch, Zürich 1785–95); »Memoirs of Horatio Lord Walpole« (1802, neue Aufl. 1808); »History of the house of Austria« (1807, 2 Bde., u. ö.; deutsch, Leipz. 1817, 4 Bde.); »Memoirs of the kings of Spain of the house of Bourbon« (1813, 3 Bde.); »Memoirs of John Duke of Marlborough« (1817–19, 3 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1847; deutsch, Wien 1820, 6 Bde.) und »Memoirs of the Pelham administration« (1829, 2 Bde.).
2) Henry Octavius, engl. Gelehrter, geb. 20. Sept. 1811, gest. 8. Juli 1881, studierte in Oxford und ward 1860 an Stelle Bandinels zum Oberbibliothekar der Bodleyanischen Bibliothek daselbst ernannt. C. gab »The chronicles of Roger of Wendover« (Lond. 1841–44) sowie »The black prince, an historical poem« (1842) und Gowers »Vox Clamantis« (1850) heraus und verfaßte mehrere wertvolle Kataloge, besonders: »Catalogus Codd. Mss. Bibliothecae Bodleianae«, I: Codices graeci, 1853; II: Codices Laudiani, 1858; III: Codices graeci et latini, 1854, sowie einen »Report on the Greek Mss. in the libraries of the Levant« (1858).
