[1662] Stokes, Sir William, zu Dublin, daselbst geb. 10. März 1839 als Sohn des Vorigen, studierte in Dublin, London, Berlin, Wien, Paris, war namentlich Schüler von Rob. Will. Smith in Dublin, wurde daselbst 1863 Dr. med. und Mag. chir., 1874 Fellow des R. C. S. Irel., nachdem er bereits seit 1871 Prof. der Chir. bei demselben geworden war. Er ist auch Surgeon des Richmond Surgical Hosp., war 1881 Präsident der Patholog. Soc., 1886 des Roy. Coll. of Surg. und erhielt in demselben Jahre von dem Lord-Statthalter von Irland Earl of Aberdeen die Ritterwürde. Er publizierte: »Essay on diagnosis and pathology of diseases of the testis« (1861) – »Contributions to practical surgery« (Dublin Quart. Journ., 1865, 66, 68, 70, 71) – »On supracondyloid amputation of thigh« (Med. Chir. Transact., 1870) – »On Maisonneuve's operation for urethral stricture« – »On the treatment of laryngeal diseases by the method of inhalation« – »On a hundred cases of stricture of the urethra« (Dublin Journ. 1871) – »On an extension apparatus for treatment[1662] of certain injuries and diseases of the lower extremity« (Brit. Med. Journ., 1878) – »On bone drainage in hip disease« (Transact. of the Acad. of Med. in Ireland, 1885) – »On acute myxoedema following thyreoidectomy« (Brit. Med. Journ., 1886). Im Jubiläums-Jahre der Brit. Med. Associat., 1882, hielt er zu Worcester die »Address in Surgery« (Brit. Med. Journ., 1882) u.s.w.
