Jan. 1841 in Georgetown (Delaware), legte seine Erfahrungen als Kriegskorrespondent in Italien 1861–62 und im Bürgerkrieg in den Büchern »Campaigns of a non-combatant«[650] (1864) und »The story of the conspiracy against the lives of the executive officers in the United States« (1865) nieder und schrieb außerdem: »The real life of Abraham Lincoln« (1867), »Life and battles of Garibaldi« (1867), »The new world compared with the old« (1868), »Mormon trials at Salt Lake« (1872), »Tales of the Chesapeake« (1880), »Bohemian days« (1881), mehrere Romane und einen Band Gedichte: »Poems« (1870).
