[157] Helps, Sir Arthur, engl. Schriftsteller, geb. 10. Juli 1813 in Streatham, gest. 7. März 1875 in London, studierte in Cambridge, war dann Privatsekretär des Staatssekretärs für Irland, Lord Morpeth, wurde 1859 Sekretär des Geheimen Staatsrats und 1872 Baronet. Er begann 1841 mit »Essays, written in the intervals of business« (neueste Ausg. 1889), auf die eine lange Reihe von politischen, sozialreformatorischen und historischen Schriften folgten. Wir nennen davon: »Companions of my solitude« (1850, 10. Ausg. 1885); »The conquerors of the new world and their bondsmen« (1852, 2 Bde.); »Friends in council« (1854, 2 Bde.; neue Folge 1857, zuletzt 1869, Dialoge über Fragen der Politik und Sozialreform); »The Spanish conquest in America« (1855–61, 4 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1900–04); »Organisation in daily life« (1862); »The life of Las Casas« (1868); »The life of Columbus« (1868); »The life of Pizarro« (1869); »The life of Hernando Cortes and the conquest of Mexico« (1871, 2 Bde.), die 1896 in neuen Ausgaben erschienen, und »Life and labours of Thomas Brassey« (7. Aufl. 1888). Von seinen belletristischen Werken ist die Tragödie »Oulita the serf« (2. Ausg. 1873) und der historische Roman »Ivan de Biron« (1873, 3 Bde.) zu erwähnen.
