Juhs), 1) John, geb. 1677 zu Marlborough in Wiltshire, st. 1749 als Secretär der Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften; er schr.: Die Belagerung von Damask (Trauerspiel), Lond. 1785, 2 Bde., Fol. 2) Samuel, trat 1810 in die britisch-ostindische Armee, war 1818–19 mit dem Corps unter den Obersten Prother u. Kennedy in Concan, vertrat daselbst die Stelle eines Brigademajors u. Militärsecretärs beim General C. Halkett, als dieser Befehlshaber der Bombayarmee war. 1843 wurde er Commandant von Bombay u. dann Brigadier des südlichen Districtes der Präsidentschaft Bombay, in welcher Stellung er am 9. Juli 1849 in Bombay starb. 3) John, geb. 1798 in Nord-Irland, kam 1817 nach Amerika, besuchte das Mount St. Mary's College zu Emmitsburg in Maryland, wurde 1825 ordinirt u. bald darauf Prediger in Philadelphia, hatte 1830 einen Streit mit dem Presbyterianer John Breckenridge, sowie später 1840 u. 1855 mit anderen Theologen in New York etc. 1850 ernannte ihn Papst Pius IX. zum katholischen Erzbischof für die New Yorker Diöcese.
