Fortuna (Mythologie)

[172] Fortuna (Mythologie), griechisch Tyche, die Tochter des Oceans und der Thetis, die mächtige Göttin des Glücks, die nach Willkür und Laune gibt und nimmt, und den Sterblichen Freude oder Jammer spendet, je nachdem es ihr gefällt. Sie hatte Tempel in Griechenland, in denen sie auf einer Kugel stehend und geflügelt abgebildet wurde, um ihre Wandelbarkeit anzudeuten; als aber ihr Dienst nach Rom kam, wurden ihr diese Attribute nicht beigelegt, damit sie immer dort weilen möchte. In ihrer Hand hält sie das Horn des Ueberflusses, aus dem sie ihre mannichfaltigen Gaben schüttelt, ein Schleier, vom Winde geschwellt, wie ein Segel, oder eine wehende Flagge, schwebt über ihrer Gestalt, man bildet sie auch mit verbundenen Augen, weil sie blindlings ihre Spenden wegwirft, daher sie oft an Unwürdige kommen. Sie ist und war die Göttin aller Derer, die sich auf's Gerathewohl in das wogende Meer des Zufalls stürzen, aller Abenteurer, aller Spieler, sie ist ganz das[172] dessen Beschlüsse unabänderlich sind. Sie erhebt heute und stürzt morgen – doch wozu eine Schilderung dieser launenhaften Göttin geben, die zwar mit dem alten Götterhimmel dahin ist, aber immer noch tausend Anhänger und Verehrer hat? Die Launen des Glückes sind noch heute dieselben wie vor Jahrtausenden, und wer – wer hätte sie nicht schon in seinem Erdenleben empfunden!
